MY TARGET
At the end of this activity, you will be skillful in designing process – oriented performance assessment.

MY TASK
After your observation experience you now have a deeply and principled understanding of the concepts of authentic assessment used in the classroom. You can now go through the process of designing performance assessment by the following these steps:
1.     Visit a class and identify performance-based activities.
2.     Choose one performance-based activity and study its process.
3.     Design a performance assessment plan for the activity you have chosen.
4.     Collect samples of performance-based assessment tools.
5.     Reflect on your experience.

MY TOOLS
In observing a class, take note of important observations of the performance-based activity in the classroom. Make a checklist of the important things you want to consider in your assessment planning. Use the activity form provided for you. You may use format of process-oriented assessment that you have taken in your assessment 2 classes. The rubrics are part and parcel of this assessment plan.

NOTES ON MY PROCESS-ORIENTED ASSESSMENT PLAN

What are the best features of my process-oriented performance assessment design?
The best feature of my process-oriented performance assessment design is that, we will be able to know and have an idea of what skills/abilities does the learners can do through the use of process-oriented performance. Through this, it will measure and able to see how the learner works on the given task.

What specific conditions are necessary for a successful use of my process-oriented performance assessment design?
The use of my process-oriented performance assessment would be successful if that assessment really suits in the level of the target learner.

What basic points should the user of this design consider?
These are the basic points that a user should consider:
Ø  Is it educational or not?
Ø  Is the assessment valid, accurate and relevant?
Ø  Is the assessment useful in the learning process of the students or not?

ANALYSIS

1.      Why do teachers need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented tasks? Why do they need to assess them?
Teachers really need to give attention to the students’ process-oriented task to monitor the ability and behaviour or the performance of the learners in a particular subject matter for them to know which part the learner is capable of and which part does the learner is weak.

2.      In what conditions can the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately?
The condition that the process-oriented performance assessment be used appropriately is that when the teacher is going to test the students’ level of capability and to know which part they are more interested.

Reflection

Make reflections on your feelings and thoughts about the observations made in this FS.

In making this part of my field study, I realized that being a teacher is not really an easy job/task. In a reason that teacher must need to look and search for an appropriate assessment for his/her students that will gain and learned from them. You have to make sure that all of the instructional decision you’ll made is appropriate for the learning needs of each students.
As a future teacher, we should be more observant and give more attention to our students because all of them have different characteristics and capabilities that we should enhance through the use of different methods, strategies and assessment tools which will be able to produce knowledge that is applicable for them in real-life situation.

FIELD STUDY 5:
LEARNING ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

EPISODE 3:
LOG ME

NAME OF THE FS STUDENT:     Joanamae Aquino Telan
COURSE:                                              BSE-3A
RESOURCE TEACHER:                Mrs. Lorna Obedoza
COOPERATING SCHOOL:           Isabela National High School

MY TARGET

At the end of this activity, you will be informed on the principles of authentic assessment and its usefulness in the classroom.

MY TASK

Authentic assessment is an alternative way of assessing students’ learning to be able to use it; you must have a deep understanding of it. To help you reach your goal, do the following task:

1)      Visit a classroom and interview the teacher on his/her experiences in using authentic assessment.
2)      Describe how the teacher uses the authentic assessment.
3)      Write a reflective journal on the activity.

MY TOOLS

For this learning activity, please document the information gathered from the interview with the teacher on authentic assessment. Write your documentation using the activity form provided for you.

MY INTERVIEW NOTES

Q1: WHY DO YOU THINK USING AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT IS IMPORTANT?
v  Using authentic assessment is important because the students are performing a task and experience a real-life situation which helps them to build their self-confidence and actively participate on it. It is said to be that the students is learning if they show capabilities and skills that probable from them after doing the task.  Students can greatly help and provides more information on how assessment could be applied simply and accordingly in the classroom.

Q2: HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM OTHER FORMS OF ASSESSMENT?
v  An authentic assessment compared to other forms of assessment, it shows the more complex skills and deeper context, knowledge reflected in new expectations for learning when the students perform a task. Here, it gives emphasis to what students really needs to know. It does not require a single correct answer and not limited to what teacher knows and the given information in the book.

Q3: HOW EFFECTIVE IS AUTHENTIC AS THE FORM OF ASSESSMENT TOOL?
v  An authentic assessment is an effective way of assessing the students because in times that I used it, good interaction and the more my students actively engaging with the task I gave. In addition, with regards to what they have learned in the class may apply them if ever they encounter it in real-life situation.

Q4: HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT AN AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT IS ACCURATE AND VALID?
v  I can say that an authentic assessment is accurate and valid if it really measures the learning of the students when it comes to perform a task. The assessment objectives should attained with the learning objectives which results to the learning outcomes of the students or simply say, their strengths and weaknesses.

ANALYSIS

1.   What is Authentic Assessment?
Ø  An authentic assessment is the modern way to assess the skills and performance of the students. It helps the students learn more and develop their weaknesses. It will also help the teacher to think for the good teaching-and-learning process used.

2.   How was authentic assessment used? Was it used to measure learning through the product?
Ø  An authentic assessment is used to know if the students really learned about the discussion by letting them show through reporting. It measures on learning through the product because they apply on what they had learned through sharing their thoughts and opinions.

REFLECTION

v  What are your insights and feelings about the use of authentic assessment?
*      Nowadays, there are few teachers who are using the traditional assessment tools in assessing students learning. We can’t really deny the fact that using authentic assessment is a great help for the students to gain more knowledge and easy for them to retain the lesson if they have experience on it or they are in hands-on.

v  Describe how the teacher used the authentic assessment?
*      As I interview my resource teacher, she said that assigning and giving of reports to her students is her way to use the authentic assessment. By this way, her students think a situation or report a certain topic which they deliver it in real. It also helps to boost their self-confidence. The teacher uses a rubric in scoring the performance of the students.

v  How did you feel about the teacher’s experience in the use of authentic assessment?
*      For me, assessing students using the authentic assessment is a good and effective way in teaching. It supports the students to build their self-confidence and actively participate on the teacher’s task. Even though it cannot assure that all the students are cooperate with it but the important is they influence with the good outcomes and the teacher must give more activities to encourage her students so that all of them will actively engaging.
v  What could be the gains of the students and teachers in using authentic assessment?
*      For the students, using the authentic assessment can be a good way of knowing themselves because they will know their capacity and capability in a certain task. They enjoy on what they are doing. For the teacher, they can easily assess students because of the learning outcomes. It is an effective tool that suites to learning styles.

v  Which part of the teacher’s use of authentic assessment do you feel like improving or revising?
*      I think the teacher must explore more activities that will encourage some of her students because not all her students want to participate in a reason that lack of confidence. Learning is a continuous process so we must adapt changes in order to cope up with an advancement of assessing students’ performance.
