COOPERATING SCHOOL: Isabela National High School
At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.
- Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment methods used by teachers.
- In my list, classify assessment methods as to conventional, authentic and alternative.
- Describe how each assessment method was used, including my personal observations.
- Confer with my FS teacher for the assessment list.
- Reflect on my experience.
MY TOOLS
As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three classes,
document your observations using the activity forms provided for you in this reference. For
your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of specification, and prepare the test
material based on the prescriptions of the school where you do class observation.

DESCRIPTION
(Bulleted description of how the assessment method is used relative to subject matter, levels of learning behaviour, length, etc.)
|
|
As I observed to the class, the teacher gave an activity sheet to the students after the discussion to be passing it on their next meeting of class since, the time is not enough to answer and pass the given
task in the same time. This kind of paper-and-pencil strategy used by the teacher is to assess student’s ability, understanding and/or how well students can analyze the topic discussed by the teacher. The students should do the task and answer the given activity based on what they had learned. In this activity, the teacher can assess the students if she attains the objectives/purpose in delivering the subject matter so that she will be able to know who among the students are needed more for extra guidance. |

Answer/Recitation)
|
As I observed to the class, while the discussion is on-going, the teacher asked questions to be answer by the students or what we call “recitation”. The questions are posed by the teacher to determine if the students already understand the discussion. Then, the answers are made by the students to responds on the given questions by speaking. This kind of oral strategy can help all the students that are involved to ensure and actively participate during the instruction. This may help the teacher in assessing what student’s understand (what they know and can do).

DESCRIPTION

|
(Assignment)
|
As I observed to the class, the teacher used two kinds of assessment strategies/tools in assessing the students learning; the board work and the homework (assignment). After the discussion, the teacher writes some problems/questions on the board to be solve/answered by the students. In this way of assessing the students, the teacher can now assess the student’s ability on what they understood in the lesson and actively participate on it. While in giving homework, if the lesson not yet already understands with some of the learners, the teacher can use another way of teaching strategies and assessment methods of assessing students to more likely learn and acquired information.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE ASSESSMENT METHOD WAS USED
|
|
In my observation, the assessment methods used in the three classes I observed is classified as traditional and alternative assessment. Since, traditional assessment is a paper-and-pencil tests
while alternative assessment is through performance tests or learning-based. The teacher used this assessment tools to tests or assess the students in accordance to their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Mostly, the teacher’s role is to develop the ability of his/her students and scored what they know, learn and can do. The students perform the task using their learning. In addition, if the teachers not attain the purpose/instructional objectives seen to the result of the assessment, the teacher should need to improve it and used other strategies to cope with it. |
ANALYSIS
- Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s used?
In the three classes that I observed, the teachers used a variety of assessment methods because they used their own strategies in assessing their students such as the teachers assessed students through giving and answering activity sheet, homework (assignment) and recitation. Recitation is contrast to the first two stated since, not just in written skills only but it should be in oral strategy because not all students are good with it. The assessment method used is relevant because, mostly the kinds of assessment is a traditional or the pen-and-paper tests which popular in teaching-learning process and another way which contrast to traditional assessment or what we call the alternative assessment or performance tests/learning-based.
2. Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviours indicated in the
objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment
methods?
objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment
methods?
Yes, since the assessment method used by the teacher is to assess student skills
and knowledge. The teacher’s purpose is to encourage the students to participate during
discussion and helping students to contribute more to class discussion based upon out of
class assignments/activities. The students are also actively engaging to the task given by
the teacher. Learners are good in oral communication that mostly question and
answer/recitation given by the teacher. They had also the skills on written strategy. The
teacher should use an appropriate and proper teaching strategies and assessment
methods in teaching-learning process.

MY REFLECTION
In this field of study, I assigned to observe how the teacher assesses the performance of the students in their participation, actions, and response. During my observation, the teacher let the students read the hand outs given then afterwards, the teacher started to discuss the lesson then assess the students by conducting an oral recitation, board work and activity sheet, etc. In three different classes I've observed, the same strategies used to start the instruction but different in times of assessment. Among the three classes, I observed that in class 1 and class 2, the female students are actively participate during the instruction rather than in male students while contrast in class 3 observation. In doing my task, I realized that the teacher must be creative in a way that she can be able to assess the students in their performance level. The teacher should use a various types of teaching methods and assessment strategies to evaluate the level of the learners. In that way, the teacher can now assess the students based on their skills, understanding and insights that the students executed. The teacher will able to know who among the students are needed more for extra guidance. Those are the teaching strategy and assessment tools that I observed and I learned during my observation.
