FIELD STUDY 5:
LEARNING ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

EPISODE 2
MY ATM CARD (AVAILABLE TESTS AND MEASURES)

NAME OF FS STUDENT: Joanamae A. Telan
COURSE: BSE-IIIA
RESOURCE TEACHER: Mrs. Lorna Obedoza
COOPERATING SCHOOL: Isabela National High School

At the end of this activity, you will be adept in designing, using, and interpreting results of objective tests.

 INITIAL NOTES

Name of School Observed: Isabela National High School
School Address:  Claravall Street, San Vicente, Ilagan City, Isabela
Date of Visit: December 9, 2014
Grade/Year Level: Grade 8-SPA(Aquino)
Subject Area: Science (Chemistry)
Subject Matter: Atom (inside and out)

Teacher’s Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Define sub-atomic particles.
2. Describe the important properties of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
3. Calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in any atom.

Desired conditions and criterion levels of the learning objectives:
The learning objective is important to teachers because the purpose of it is to assist them to identify the focus of their subject matter and assessment. For a teacher, it is necessary to teach directly the lesson to the students. She must have a guide so that she can be managing well the discussion and the students are easily coping up. When assessing them, make sure that a certain activity is always suited to the learning objective and subject matter. This will help the students improve their learning skills connected to real-life situation.

Other notes:
Based on my observation, I learned that when making a learning objective we must put in mind that the learning objectives are always congruent to the skills and content so that it could be observed through the behavior of the learners if it is learned or not. Also, the assessment should be linked in the learning objectives. With this, we can achieve a high-quality assessment.

1.       Do you think the teacher’s learning objectives was appropriately assessed by your test items?
The teacher’s learning objectives were appropriately assessed by the test items because there was a congruence between the learning objectives and assessment tool that is used. I can confidently say that all of the learning objectives were achieved not only in the learning process but also in the assessment and evaluation. In constructing test items, it must follow the guidelines and tips of principles of high-quality assessment in order for the test items to have a validity, reliability, fairness, practicality and efficiency.

2.       Why do you have to study the teacher’s learning objectives prior to developing an assessment tool?
It is very much needed to study the teacher’s learning objectives prior to developing an assessment tool for it will serve as a guide as to what assessment tool that is appropriate and should be used as the strategy for the presentation and discussion for a good interaction and in order to have relevance. The assessment tool to be used must always be consistent to the learning objectives because they are always related to each other in terms of improving the learning outcomes. Through this, we can determine if the learning objectives are achieved or not and we can have a basis or standards for the revision of the instruction if it is not achieved.

Write your personal reflection of thoughts and feelings regarding Peace Concept on Focus. Share your reflection with your FS teacher and classmates.

Assessment is a way to evaluate the understanding and learning of the students. It should be used in a fair, appropriate, valid and reliable in order to have a high-quality assessment.
Peace concept means the teacher must have the attitude of being fair or have the concept of fairness. Fairness which means it is needed to be equal in dealing the students at all time. Like, in giving compliment and feedback to them and also in making assessment tool. The assessment to be used must always be appropriate to the level of the learners and of course with the lesson to be discussed on the subject matter.  It makes student capable of passing the test because everything on the test are already learned and the checking of the test must have a criteria especially if it is an authentic test to give the students ideas on how to improve the learning on the next time around and there is reflection because of the criteria. It is a must that the output of the assessment will be known in order to know if they understood the lesson or not. The appropriateness of assessment tool with regards to the leaning objectives will bring relevance and good learning outcomes. The validity of the assessment tool talks about the purpose of the test. A reliable test would show similar performance at different conditions.
To be concluding, we must be skilful in designing a test and interpreting results of objective test so as to achieve a high-quality assessment.
